🗺️ Map Interaction & Time History
Use the Start Time and End Time inputs to filter lightning strikes by date and time, then click Apply
Filter.
The history slider below the map controls the data timestamp. The right side is the current time (Now),
and the left side goes back up to the Max History hours. Data displayed corresponds to the slider's
current position.
Click Play to animate the history of strikes. Adjust playback speed using the slider or the Minutes per
Second input. Click Stop to pause.
🌐 Layer Management & Visualization
Use the checkboxes to toggle visualization layers:
UK Lightning Layer: Displays individual strike markers in the UK.
Lightning Heatmap: Shows a 2D density map. Adjust appearance using Heatmap Blur.
Lightning Counter: Displays the total count of strikes within clusters.
Sound: Enable to play thunder audio for new strikes in your current view.
Weather Overlays:
Map Style: Change base map (Satellite, Dark, Light, etc.).
Radar & Weather: Displays precipitation intensity and reflectivity (UK High-Res and Global).
Satellite: Shows cloud imagery (Infrared, Visible, Water Vapor).
Isobar (Pressure): Overlays lines of equal mean sea level pressure.
Surface Fronts: Overlays Cold, Warm, Stationary, and Occluded front boundaries.
Global Warnings: Displays active weather bulletins and warning zones.
⚡ HOCO: Automated Convective Outlook
The HOCO (Handry Outlook Convective Outlook) provides automated, high-resolution risk areas for
thunderstorms across the UK and Ireland.
Select Run: Use the dropdown menu to choose specific forecast model runs based on creation time.
Day Selection: Toggle between Day 0, Day 1, and Day 2 to see short-term and medium-term outlooks.
Opacity Slider: Use the HOCO Opacity slider to adjust polygon transparency for better visibility
against radar data.
Metadata Legend: A floating legend appears when HOCO is active, showing the specific Creation Time
and Valid Period for the forecast.
HOCO V2.0: Use the link in the legend to view the full detailed forecast page.
🎯 Nowcasting & Prediction
Enable Nowcast to display predicted lightning movement based on recent clusters. Purple indicates very
high confidence; Red indicates high confidence.
Nowcast cones update dynamically as you move the time slider or change filters.
🛠️ Expert Mode & Custom Layers
Enable Expert Mode for advanced tools:
Custom KML/PNG: Upload KML risk zones or PNG model outputs.
KML Styling: Ensure polygon names match levels like Slight risk or High risk for automatic coloring.
PNG Bounds: Filenames should include region names (e.g., England) for auto-positioning.
Export: Click Export Strikes As PNG to save the current map view. You can drag an area on the map to
define the export bounds.
